Home and Destination Charging (0 -> 100%)

Charging is possible by using a regular wall plug or a charging station. Public charging is always done through a charging station. How fast the EV can charge depends on the charging station (EVSE) used and the maximum charging capacity of the EV. The table below shows all possible options for charging the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. Each option shows how fast the battery can be charged from empty to full.

Long Distance Suitability

How suitable an electric car is for long trips depends not only on the range. How quickly the car can charge plays an almost equally important role. Whether an EV is suitable for long trips depends on the battery capacity, efficiency, and fast charging capability.

To easily compare cars among each other, a benchmark has been established that combines these factors into the total distance a vehicle can cover with one 15-minute charging stop: the '1-Stop Range'. Based on the 1-Stop Range, the 5-star rating is determined. The result of the benchmark is shown in the graph below.

All about the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive

No longer available

This electric vehicle is no longer in production and not available to buy new. The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive was available from January 2013 until May 2015. Financial data like price, leasing and company car tax were applicable to the final year of availability of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive.

A new model of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive (2013) is available: Smart ForTwo Electric Drive (2017).

Pricing

The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive had a Recommend Retail Price (RRP) of £20,075 and an On The Road Price (OTR) of £20,395. The OTR Price includes VAT, first year of VED, vehicle first registration fee, number plates and delivery. The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive was eligible for an Electric Car Grant (ECG) of £5,000. The OTR Price including the ECG for the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is £15,395.

Drivetrain and Performance

The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is a full electric vehicle (BEV). The maximum power of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is 55 kW (74 hp). The maximum torque is 96 lb-ft. The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is rear wheel drive and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 11.5 seconds. The top speed is 78 mph.

Battery and Charging

The battery of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive has a total capacity of 17.6 kWh. The usable capacity is 16.7 kWh (estimate). An estimated range of about 65 miles is achievable on a fully charged battery. The actual range will however depend on several factors including climate, terrain, use of climate control systems and driving style.

For example: sustaining high speeds in cold weather could result in a range of around 45 mi. However, driving at low speeds in mild weather will increase the range to around 105 mi.

Charging is done using a Type 2 connector and the on-board charger has a maximum power of 3.3 kW. This charges a fully depleted battery back to full in around 6 hours. An optional on-board charger with a maximum power of 22.0 kW is available. This charges a fully depleted battery back to full in around 55 minutes. Charging the car using a regular wall plug will take around 8 hours 45 minutes.

Rapid charging is not possible.

Energy Consumption

The estimated combined (motorway and city) energy consumption of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is about 257 Wh per mile. By comparison, this energy consumption is the equivalent of a fuel consumption of 157 mpg in a traditional petrol car.

The actual energy consumption will depend on several factors including climate, terrain, use of climate control systems and driving style. For example: sustaining high speeds in cold weather could result in an energy use of around 371 Wh per mile. However, driving at low speeds in mild weather will increase the efficiency to about 159 Wh per mile.

CO2 Emission

The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive emits no CO2 during driving. This only includes direct emissions from the vehicle itself. The energy needed to charge the battery might have been (partly) generated by the use of fossil fuels. Vehicles with an internal combustion engine will always emit CO2 during driving. Additionally, CO2 is emitted during the production and transport of fossil fuels.
